"Go little blackie"

The Coen brothers True Grit shares much in common with the 1969 film in terms of the basic story and characters. However, the soul of this film lies in 14-year-old Mattie Ross - played with superb grace and confidence by Hailee Steinfeld. To me True Grit is a deeply spiritual film and this is reflected in the lyrical connection of its three protagonists. The Coen brothers style and influence has always been deeply rooted by classic Hollywood (notably film noir and screwball comedy of the 1940s). They embrace, respect and understand this influence ultimately creating a signature vision and rhythm of their own.

There are so many truly beautiful and inspiring moments to this film, perhaps none more magical then a moment in which Mattie pronounces "Go little blackie" before crossing the river to join Rooster Cogburn and LaBoeuf in pursuit of Tom Chaney. I have already gone to see this film four times (perhaps five or six by the end of the month?) and it has taken my breath away each time. A moment of pure cinema…
