A2P Cinema's
200 Favorite Films of the 1950s
Postwar
cinema created many different world film movements. American cinema
was struggling with commercial success and artistic freedom in the studio
world. The creativity came in the form of B films/noirs that continued
from the postwar 40s. Television stole American audiences but also created
a new form of the Hollywood movie star and this was reflected in the
rebellion/sex appeal of James Dean, Marlon Brando or Marilyn Monroe
all of whom generated a cult celebrity. While postwar noirs of the 40s
reflected America's dark fears and desires, the bomb scares of the 50s
gave way to all kinds of unique sci-fi horror films.
Color
started to fully blossom on the screen and it was particularly a treasure
to observe the way earlier masters of black-and-white transitioned over
to color. The 50s were the richest decade of the great Alfred Hitchcock's
career and he displayed a virtuoso use of color to create some of cinema
history's most magical moments in 1958s Vertigo. Other directors masterfully
used Technicolor within their own unique strengths (such as expressive
melodrama for Douglas Sirk or musicals for Vincente Minnelli).
World
Film Festivals (such as Cannes) emerged and helped give foreign films
more recognition and wider audiences. European cinema received much
world attention and accolades with traditionalist filmmakers like Ingmar
Bergman or Carl Theodor Dreyer as well as Italy's Federico Fellini and
Roberto Rossellini, not to mention at the end of the decade began the
birth of the French New Wave which forever shook the world of cinema
history. Some of the very greatest films and filmmakers of the postwar
era came from Japan - notably Yasujiro Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, Mikio Naruse
and Akira Kurosawa. Many of their films did not reach audiences overseas
until decades later, but these remain among the very greatest films
ever made.
Look
over the list ... I would be very interested in you sending your choices
or sharing feedback (did I miss anything?).
