With the praise, respect and recognition Alfred Hitchcock
has received over time (and rightfully so) as the creator of
endless lists of memorable classics and masterpieces
you'd find it difficult to imagine that anything he made was
overlooked. However, there are some of his films that have
simply been forgotten despite being among his finest work.
The Wrong Man, and Under Capricorn being most notable,
but 1953's I Confess belongs among Hitchcock's most
underseen/overlooked films. From a technical aspect, it's
absolutely flawless and the work of a master. Through
beautiful black-and-white cinematography (by Hitchcock
favorite Robert Burks) the viewer is completely absorbed
into the films norish atmosphere. While there are moments
that may be heavy-handed or don't always work, the
brilliance of the film's craftsmanship with each frame is
wonderful to experience and analyze. Through religious
beliefs and concepts, I Confess becomes an examination
of guilt. The title suggests more then the confessions within
the films murder, as each character is releasing their own guilt
through varies forms or confession. Hitchcock has made
better and more important or influential films, but few are as
unfairly forgotten as I Confess.
